What is a Space maintainer?

Primary teeth maintain their position until the permanent teeth that will emerge after them take their place in the dental arch, guide the eruption area and of course, perform in the pronunciation of sounds chewing and speech. However, early loss of primary teeth due to dental trauma or other reasons is basically individual oral appliances applied in dentistry to maintain the position of the dental arch until the successive permanent tooth erupts (neighboring teeth slide into this space, leaving the successive permanent tooth impacted and crooked due to loss of space).

Space maintainers are indicated   due to factors such as the number of missing teeth, the age when they are placed in the mouth, and compliance with patient home care. or it can be in removable fixed forms. Before deciding to make a space maintainer,  apart from mechanical needs, the pediatric patient comply to an impression taking and fitting of the appliance. Afterwards avoiding excessively hard and sticky foods depending on the design of the appliance, carefully brushing the environment, and complying with the appliance controls will ensure better performance of the appliance.
